Geography Course Union
The Geography Course Union (GCU) at UBC’s Okanagan campus is an organization that has been built by students for students. The primary purpose of the GCU is to take geographic learning out of the classroom and into the real world, in both formal and informal ways. In order to achieve this goal, the union is involved in a variety of fund raising initiatives during the academic year. The GCU’s main event for the year is a trip to the annual conference of the Western Division of the Canadian Association of Geographers (WDCAG), which in past years has been held at universities in Kamloops, Abbotsford, Bellingham WA, Burnaby, Edmonton, Victoria, Lethbridge and Prince George. This provides an opportunity for students to present their research to Geography faculty members and other students from western Canada and the U.S. The WDCAG conference is also a fantastic social and networking event for students.
Additionally, the GCU organizes social events which bring students together to have fun and get to know one another. These include bowling nights, ski and field trips, and dinners.
The GCU is one of the smaller course unions on campus but has been very successful over the past several years. Through the collective support of our members and professors, the GCU has been able to meet its goal of providing a welcoming environment for the geography community at UBCO. In particular, the GCU depends for its functioning on a core group of Geography students who are willing to serve on the union executive. So if you are interested in volunteering a bit of your time on the GCU executive, please contact us! Further information can be obtained by emailing email@example.com
